August 2, 2004 - Parkwood, The Colonel R. Samuel McLaughlin Estate National Historic Site, Oshawa
Did you know that Simcoe Day in Oshawa is called McLaughlin Day? And it has been for a longer period of time than Ontario has had a Simcoe Day on the first Monday in August! Each year Parkwood Estates holds a McLaughlin Day celebrating local history.

This year the Incorporated Militia of Upper Canada and the Campfollowers were invited to take part in their celebration of history. Also present were representatives of the
United Empire Loyalists, model train enthusiasts, WW II vehicle owners and lovers of antique Buicks. IMUC put on demonstrations of 1812 drill, manoeuvres and battle line tactics. The Campfollowers organized a "Tea" for the site organizers and dignitaries, including one of Col. Sam's granddaughters. Our pioneer, Ross Stone, along with the help of Lt. Wooton, Lt. Hill and Pvt. Wooton brought along their extensive collections of period tools, swords, and muskets. Some of our biggest crowds were with these very knowledgeable members as they explained the parts and workings of the antiques and reproductions.
We would like to thank Parkwood Estates for including us in their tribute to Ontario and its history. Thanks also to Carol Mark for the demonstration pictures.
