June Musters - Willowbank and Georgina Pioneer Village
Willowbank House in Queenston - June 16th-17th, 2007
Queenston, Ontario
During June we have been involved in two Militia Musters. During the War of 1812 all able bodied males were required to muster for military training once a month in preparation for hostilities coming to their county. On the weekend of June 16 & 17, the Incorporated Militia of Upper Canada joined the Norfolk Militia and the Glengarry Light Infantry at Willowbank House in Queenston. Willowbank House dates from the period and is now the home of the School of Restorative Arts which trains people in procedures to restore historical properties.
Under the direction of Richard Feltoe, the three units put on drill, and musket demonstrations as well as a small Saturday skirmish on the lower front lawn. Many local residents and area tourists dropped by to tour the camps, interact with the re-enactors and ask lots and lots of questions.
Drills started with citizen volunteers falling in with muskets, pitchforks and whatever else was available. Cooking demonstrations during the day concluded with a full camp dinner with over 40 different, mostly period, prepared dishes. All agreed that this was an event worth repeating.
On a side note, Khaltmaa Battugla, a member of the Mongolian State Great Hural (Parliament) stopped by with is entourage on the way to lunch in Niagara-on-the-lake for a "Kodak" moment. They had spotted sentries on duty at the end of the driveway! They even made a $100 donation to the House.
