June 2009

Celebrate Barrie, June 6th, 2009

June 6th this year saw the Incorporated Militia's return to Celebrate Barrie. Along with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment and US naval forces, tactical demonstrations and skirmish scenarios were put on for the attending public. Historically the Barrie area was on the overland Nine Mile Portage route that linked Lake Ontario to the upper great lakes via Lake Simcoe.

Caledon Fair - June 13, 2009

June 13th saw us participate in a small town fair. The Caledon Fair is celebrating its 149th year. We set up a display camp, participated in their annual parade, talked extensively about our weapons, uniforms, and accoutrement. Two tactical demonstrations explaining the platoon exercises, manual at arms, an d troop movements kept us and the visiting public very busy all day. Our Campfollower Ladies enjoyed the work of the line during their "Ladies' Tea"!

Port Dover, June 20-21, 2009

Port Dover Ontario is a small fishing and vacation destination on the Canadian side of Lake Erie. Port Dover was first inhabited by the Neutral First Nations . For more than 200 years, Port Dover was host to many native people, European explorers and missionaries, who enjoyed a humble existence along the shores of Lake Erie. The village, settled by United Empire Loyalists in the early 1800's was first named Dover Mills, after the port of Dover in England. The village was later burned to the ground by Americans in the War of 1812 (May 14, 1814). The town was rebuilt in the 1830's and the name changed to Port Dover.

With its location on the lake, its mild temperature and beautiful countryside, Port Dover has much to offer. In the summer, Port Dover is busy with thousands of tourists who come to swim in Lake Erie and bask on its sandy beaches. At one time, the fresh water fishing fleet based in the town's harbour was believed to be the largest in the world. Even with declining fish stocks, both commercial and sport fishing continues to be important to the community. .

Glenngary Light Infantry Fort Erie Garrison June 26-28

Six members of the Incorporated Militia joined the Glengarry Light Infantry for their garrison weekend at Old Fort Erie. We would like to commend the GLI for their superb hospitality, making us feel very welcome at their annual event. The highlight of the weekend was the kitted hike up the Niagara Escarpment. Lead by Dave and Bill McMeekin we followed Brock's Canadian/British route along the Queenston Heights to his monument overlooking the Niagara River. Many of the paths, cuts and landmarks of October 13, 1812 are still identifiable!

We would like to thank all members of the GLI for including us in their garrison weekend, with special thanks to Julie and Chris Winger for their professional (and delicious) interpretation in the fort's kitchen!
