April 2008

With April, the Incorporated Militia started, what looks like a very busy season!

April 12, Formal Mess Dinner

This month, our members were involved in three very different regimental activities. The first gathering of the regiment was at our Regimental Mess Dinner held in the Blue Barracks at Old Fort York in Toronto. This was a very appropriate setting for our annual mess dinner. Along with our guests from the Glenngary Light Infantry, the officers, men and ladies dined, toasted the King, the regiments, and comrades remembered. Jason Everett hosted at President of the Mess and Jim Niddery acted as Mr. Vice. Mess transgressions were kept to a minimum!!! We look forward to next year's IMUC Mess.

April 19, York Regional Police Military Tattoo

On Saturday April 19 we were involved in the York Regional Police Tattoo that was held in Newmarket to raise funds for the Special Olympics. The Incorporated Militia put on a display of drill and tactics to compliment the five Police sponsored Drum and Pipe bands, the original 48th Highlanders, the York Regional K9 division and a bevy of Scottish Dancers. David Onley, Lt. Governor of Ontario, was the guest of honour. More than $50,000 was raised.

April 26, School of the Soldier, Historical Cooking School, Old Fort York

The officers and NCOs of the different War of 1812 regiments meet yearly at the beginning of the season to go over drill and safety concerns. This is done before the start of the re-enactment season. This day of presentations and drill is designed to ensure that all groups have a common background.

At the same time as the School of the Soldier, several of our Campfollowers were enrolled in the Historical Cooking School put on by the fort staff. Open hearth recipes and cooking techniques were presented to those lucky enough to be able to attend. We look forward to sharing in some of these newly learned skills at upcoming camps.
